about
The history of choral music from a humorous point of view.
lyrics
CHORAL LIT.
Before there were notes there were neumes
You could say that the world had neume-onia
Sheet music was precious and few
Hard to find any someone would loan ya
So we’d all gather ‘round the one part-song we’d found
And bellow a strain for to hear
It’s amazing how good we could sing, knock on wood,
When imbibing hard liquor and beer
From stories like this we can see
That the voice has a rich history
Now in these tiny chairs we sit
Hearing chant put to the holy writ
Years ago this music was a hit
Says our professor of Choral Lit.
Once again we go back in time
When reading music was largely neume-onic
The Romans looked back to the Greeks
Though their parties were hardly platonic
(Fa la la la la Oh! Fa lala la la Oh!)
Soon England and France added their song and dance
To chip into the choral brigade
Each hoisted their ensign and put their two cents in
Now see what our history’s made!
Its spirit we surely assume
In the words “cano ergo sum”
Now our repertoire grows bit by bit
And our camaraderie is closely knit
We’d unhesitatingly admit
We love to sit three hours in Choral Lit.
If one day the Lord deems us unfit
And turns the earth into a fiery pit
Though life ends, we wouldn’t give a whit
For with God we have no quarrel, He is heaven’s mohel
Scrap your mortal coil, sing and be cantoral
We’ll fit right in for all angels study Choral Lit.
We have eternity to benefit
From what we’re learning here in Choral Lit.
